... The Time Lady Donna
After marrying Shaun Temple, Donna was happy, if sometimes a bit distant. They were married for a few years until Shaun was killed in a car accident. After this, Donna found living in their home, as well as neighbourhood or "anywhere that reminded her of him" too much to bear and she took up traveling on her own.
Donna eventually settled in Toronto, Ontario (Canada) and began temping once more only she found that temping in Toronto was a far busier career choice than it was in Chiswick. Eventually she was contracted to work at a company in Toronto, not far from the docks on Lake Ontario, where she met another 'temp' by the name of Susan Foreman-Campbell and became close friends with the "Ice Queen" Susan, pushing her to date "Jake" (who was Jack Harkness in disguise).
When the Torchwood-UNIT joint operation went sideways, Donna was caught in the middle and dragged into custody alongside Susan, who she then learned was actually known as only the Doctor.
Dormant memories suddenly flooding her mind, Donna was close to burning up when a mortally wounded Claude -- the Director of Torchwood Five -- pulled Donna in for a kiss just as he regenerated, loaning some of his excess energy to her to complete the metacrisis and saving her life and mind.
Once she recovered, Susan -- the Doctor -- explained to her that the skinny bloke in pinstripes was long gone... not only that incarnation had long since regenerated out but also that particular Time Lord had reached the end of his long life and died. Donna, through what little memories of his she had managed to keep, understood and also knew who Susan really was to him... and was honoured when she asked Donna to come back to the TARDIS.
Donna accepted, not only because her life had seemed a bit hollow, if happy, without her "daft Martian" but also because now, like them, she was a Time Lord and wanted to know what it meant to her, as well as receive training.
At that point, it became the Doctor and Donna once more.
