The Man Who Cannot Die
Captain Jack Harkness is a mysterious figure with an even more mysterious past. His name is a fiction, but he's far too attached to it now to use anything else. No one else can imagine anything else fitting him either, so fiction or not, everyone knows him as Captain Jack.

The Divergence from BBC Who's Canon
After the 456 incident, Jack would run and travel in the stars on his own for a few years until meeting the young helmsman and space ship pilot Alonso Frame, Alonso would help Jack heal from Ianto's death and eventually even return to Earth with Jack to help rebuild Torchwood Three with Gwen Cooper, Rhys Williams and Mickey Smith as well as no other than Dr. Martha Jones, who became rather disillusioned with UNIT after the events in the episode "Journey's End".
Where this fan series begins to change and branch off from canon is just right there -- instead of Torchwood being disbanded completely, "head office" was moved from Canary Wharf to Toronto, Canada and with Gwen & Jack's return to active duty, Torchwood Toronto ("Torchwood Five") granted them permission to rebuild the Hub under the Plas.
Jack returned to his role as Director of Torchwood Three with a new team.

Meeting Fifteen
_Ironically, it didn't take long for things to go a bit sideways. A few
months into it, Dr, Jones-Smith decided she wished to return to a
'normal life' and took a position at a London Hospital. Mickey remained
in Cardiff.
However, when news came that Martha had been kidnapped, Torchwood was on high alert although it was, for all intents and purposes, a normal Earth kidnapping with no sign of alien interference... until a certain Mr. Pond, whose daughter Amy, called because she and her husband Rory had also disappeared. When Mr. Pond told Jack that there was a possible connection to a mysterious man by the name of "the Doctor" with a "blue box", Jack realized the disappearances were likely connected and threw his team into high gear.
Unfortunately, he was also kidnapped.and in so doing met the Fifteenth Doctor. (The Legacy: Female of the Species)
Eventually, Jack would choose to remain on the TARDIS with the Doctor when everyone else left, refusing to let her wander the universe alone. They would eventually end up crossing Jack's personal timeline by revisiting the 456 incident, only she would choose to change the end subtly by kidnapping Ianto after he was made critically ill, and therefore presumed dead, so that Jack's personal timeline would not be changed and therefore keeping the Weave of Time intact. It would end up that doing so was necessary, but they couldn't return the now live Ianto Jones and so gave him the choice to travel with them. Ianto chose to also travel with the Doctor, joining Jack and her on board the TARDIS.
In the adventures that ensued, Jack would discover that he had fallen in love with the new Doctor, and she with him, and Ianto would choose to leave the TARDIS in order not to get in the way of their developing relationship. However, Jack would return to Ianto and leave the TARDIS after the Doctor and he drifted apart once the Time Lord Remnant, survivors from Gallifrey and the Last Great Time War, arrrived on Earth. Jack resumed his former duties in Torchwood, albeit not as Director as before.
